The berry bushes in April

The berry bushes have developed so fast that I’m behind to post about. The photos might yet be somehow outdated because they show flowers and fruit have appeared meanwhile. That makes a quick overview urgent.

The red currant has quite a lot of berries meanwhile. It is an older bush which produces really good every year. The berries are pretty sour. Most of them will get into jelly and cakes. We have another younger one a ‘Jonkher van Tets’ which berries taste so good and less sour so that you can eat them directly in large amounts. We have also white currant, even more sour and older older black currant bushes of very good quality. All the currant plants together will produce a surprisingly rich harvest.

The gooseberry fruits have gone pretty quick over the last two weeks. We have three plants. Only red ones which I find do taste better than the green varieties.

The josta berry bushes are blooming since weeks now. Which is nice for their yellow flowers are something special. The fruits are also tasty. Although I believe something is strange with our plants like they might be a mutation. The berries appear to be too small. They are about currant size but are expected to be bigger than them.

First flowers on the strawberries appeared. What concerns me is that large a part of the strawberry plants won’t really grow tall so far. They are all supposed 2-3 years old now so they should still be in good condition.

The blueberry bushes are blooming. They had a lot of berries last year and will be hopefully getting a go in growth now. One of the plants seems to have a deseased wood which is bad.

Not much is going on with raspberries and blackberries. Just a few blooming here and there. One raspberry will fruit in autumn anyway and was cut down to the ground.
